EXPECTATIONS COME AFTER COMMUNICATION

Yesterday, I learned the significance of communication. I had a challenging conversation with my training business partner about our drawbacks since he started working with us in one of my businesses. It was difficult for me to address these topics in a way that wouldn't sound rude or insulting, especially knowing that he is not only a co-worker but also a friend, which made it twice as hard.

But because I took that as a challenge for me to learn and be better, I made it happen and learned that communication helps me understand his situation, his perspective, and most importantly, resolve problems. We got closer and trusted each other more after that hard conversation.

I learned that my reactions to unfortunate events aren’t necessary when I haven’t yet taken the step to ask questions. Expectations should come after communication. Expectations without communication are a recipe for unfair reactions.

Here are my key takeaways...

One important realization I’ve come to is that allowing myself to be vulnerable during tough conversations can create a more open and accepting space for my thoughts and perspectives.

As a freelancer, I hope these tips help you too:

  • Take a deep breath—don’t waste energy on situations beyond your control.

  • Embrace vulnerability—it can help keep the atmosphere open and warm for understanding different thoughts and perspectives.

  • Remember, tough situations bring valuable lessons.

  • It’s okay to make mistakes—nobody's perfect!

  • Communication is the foundation for healthy relationships (in both personal and professional settings).

  • Make time to address difficult conversations formally.

  • Set expectations only after clear communication.

  • Be slow to emotional reactions—but don’t forget to acknowledge them!

As your fellow freelance designer, I’m still working on these myself. So, here’s a reminder to all of us, let’s do our best to stay kind and mindful.
